Each of us wants to keep the sharpness of mind and memory for many years. But we do not always understand how to do this?

What’s good for the body is good for the brain: To stay healthy and active, the brain, like the body, needs regular exercise. But which ones?

To answer this question, Ryuta Kawashima, a professor and leading Japanese specialist in brain imaging, has conducted a series of studies, the results of which may seem surprising. It turned out that the most effective way to train the brain is to quickly solve simple examples.

Today we want to offer you some exercises from the notebook “Development of memory and intelligence. Notebook number 1 “.

Features of tasks

Examples for addition and subtraction in two steps are in random order. Since the level of difficulty of tasks is about the same, you can, by timing and solving examples faster and faster, track your progress.

In a day, you need to solve two pages (both sides of one sheet) of examples as quickly as possible. Prepare a stopwatch and write down in how many minutes and seconds you managed to cope with all the tasks. Try to improve the result every time. Perhaps, at the initial stage, it will take about 10 minutes to solve the examples, but gradually you will achieve the desired intermediate result – 5 minutes. If you can handle the examples of one day in 2 minutes, then this will mean that your level is very high.

Before starting your workout, use the following three tests to determine how your brain is currently working.

Account test

Time yourself and count out loud from 1 to 120 as quickly as possible. Try to pronounce the numbers clearly. Thus, the overall work of the frontal lobes of the left and right hemispheres is assessed.

In addition, the test allows you to determine mathematical ability: 45 seconds – the level of a high school student, 35 seconds – a high school student, 25 seconds – an exact science student. Set a goal for yourself and try to achieve it.

Word memorization test

Here are 30 words of no more than three syllables. In 2 minutes, you need to memorize as much as possible. After the time has passed, write down what you remember in 2 minutes. Each word correctly spelled gives you 1 point. With this test, you can determine how the anterior part of the frontal lobe of the left hemisphere, which is responsible for short-term memory, functions.

Stroop test

Before starting testing, go through the preparation for it. Say the color of the words out loud, doing it as quickly as possible. Be careful: you should not read the words, but name their color. If you’re wrong, name the color again. (Example: if it says red, say blue; if red, say green; if red, say red.)

Practice on one line first:

Did you give the correct answers: blue, yellow, red, green, yellow?

Now start the exercise. Write down the start time of testing and name the color of the words the same as in preparation. When you are done with the exercise, write down the time to complete and the number of minutes and seconds you need.

The Stroop test evaluates the joint work of the anterior parts of the frontal lobes of the left and right hemispheres. The speed of its implementation depends on the individual characteristics, therefore no time frame is set.

When performing the test, both hemispheres of the brain are involved simultaneously and a conflict arises between visual and logical perception.

This strengthens interhemispheric connections and perfectly trains perception and concentration.
